Perineal repair

Access the Perineal Care Guidelines, QHEPS intranet site via policies, Cairns & Hinterland Hospital & Health Service - Women’s Gynaecology Neonatal Procedures (see link below).

Attend a Perineal Repair Workshop. This workshop is aimed at midwives wishing to develop practical skills and theoretical knowledge of 1st & 2nd degree tears in childbirth.

Content of the workshop includes:

  • Audiovisual aids with information on the principles of recognition and management of perineal trauma
  • Surgical skills workshops with the use of models – knot tying, instrument ties
  • Case scenarios and perineal repair simulation exercises

Complete three perineal repairs under supervision by an accredited midwife or doctor – to be documented on the Midwifery Skills Competency in Perineal Repair.  Submit to the Midwifery educator - evidence of competency can then be recorded on the Trendcare education database.

Recognition of prior learning– see Midwifery Educator or NUM of Birth Suite
